The Magic of Sea-Run Brown Trout

The sea-run brown trout of the Rio Grande are a true phenomenon. Initially introduced to the river, these trout unexpectedly migrated to the ocean in search of food, evolving into a unique species by the 1930s. This annual migration enables them to grow to remarkable sizes, earning the Rio Grande its reputation for hosting the largest brown trout on the planet.

Howenh Lodge: A Fisherman’s Haven

At the heart of this angling paradise lies Howenh Lodge, situated on a stunning 15-mile stretch of riverfront estancia. With numerous extraordinary fishing spots and incredible holding pools, trout ranging from 10 to 20 pounds are common, and fish between 20 and 30 pounds are frequently landed. The fishing season begins on November 1st, with peak season from mid-January to March 31st. However, excellent fishing continues until the end of April.

Chinook Salmon Fishing

In addition to the magnificent sea-run brown trout, the Rio Grande experiences a significant run of Chinook salmon from September to November. Interestingly, these two species do not compete, as their habits and spawning grounds differ. This presents an exciting alternative for anglers targeting powerful Chinook salmon in rocky-bottom areas.

Herminia Spring Creek

Guests of Howenh Lodge also gain access to Herminia Spring Creek, a delightful stream teeming with colorful resident browns. This spring creek offers a unique fishing experience, with a season that parallels the sea-run brown trout season.
